Taking an emotive, artistic approach to her label Dress Up, Stephanie Downey designs are infused with a sensitivity and nostalgia that is often overlooked in a trend-driven market.
For AW11, the Melbourne designer looks to Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky’s intimate Polaroids. Wholly embracing his dreamlike images – taken between the late ‘70s and the early ‘80s – the collection, titled Wait a Moment, employs an icy palette of misty greys, cool blues and mossy greens, recalling Tarkovsky’s enigmatic settings.
Relaxed silhouettes evoke a sense of languor captured in the still images. Romantic 1940’s styles of wide-legged cashmere trousers, floral prints, double-breasted blouses and soft trenches complement Tarkovsky’s aesthetic.
A few styles from Dress Up’s SS11 collection have returned, including tie-up shirts and dropped-waist dresses. Downey also reintroduces culottes – both short and maxi – in pale caramel and ivory. Although elegant, loose shapes and undone styling give the collection a masculine feel.
Kate Reynolds and Downey’s spot on styling means it is almost impossible to pick stand-outs from the collection, as if every piece belongs to one cohesive look. A few particularly appealing looks for winter include the ivory pleat pants teamed with a bottle green cropped top and the knit leggings with the floral overblouse.
With each season Dress Up only gets stronger—this young label’s future is looking pretty bright.
